Dentists
Lionel M. Nelson, DMD
Concerning Dr. Lionel Nelson: Their practice is listed on the BASIX discount program, but once you get there, they will tell you they are not really a part of that program. They will not honor the discount plan. Then they tell you they can give you a small discount, but it is not comparable to Basix.
After my visit, I told them they should resolve the discrepancy with Basix, but they said Dr. Nelson told the reception desk to just deal with each client and tell each person individually. This is not a straightforward approach. I also felt Dr. Nelson was trying to sell me additional procedures that I did not need. I would not recommend him.
great dentist
Dr.Lionel Nelson took over Dr. Bregman's practice last year. Like his predecessor, he's fantastic, and his staff takes excellent care of his patients. I highly recommend him.
stay away from Blaylock
Stay away from Brent Blaylock on Old Chapel Hill Road. He overcharges and recommends unneccessary procedures. I was forced to find a new dentist after going to this guy, and he told me that Blaylock had been trying to gouge me.
Dentist with good pain skills...
I've been seeing Dr. Carl Furr on Shannon Rd for the past several years. I have had terrible dental experiences in the past where multiple Novocaine shots did nothing for me. I won't say it's been painless, but I've survived multiple fillings and drillings as well as a replacement crown with very little pain. I don't think he's cheap, but he really knows what he's doing.
Thanks so much !!
But do you know how much will it be ?
Thanks![]()
Braces recommendation
I highly highly recommend the UNC school of dentistry graduate orthodontic clinic. It is the teaching clinic for the dental school, so residents do the work but are completely supervised by faculty. It is a little hard to get in there (they run in-takes every 6 months) and you are restricted to certain clinic days for appointments (mine are always on Tuesdays), but if you are flexible it is so worth it. The cost is so much less than what you will pay for adult braces anywhere else, the have a payment plan of $100 month with no interest, and the work they do is thorough and excellent. You pay a flat fee and they take care of you until you are done - even if that takes years longer than the average with more hardware and work than they projected. I had braces as an adolescent and I can't even compare the difference in quality of care and outcome. The faculty monitor everything and since they are students they are motivated to make your teeth PERFECT (not just okay). It was worth twice what I paid for what I had done. The phone number to call for information about getting an evaluation is: 919-966-4428

Additional dentist recommendations from the Gradwomen list
1. Jonathan Bregman - located on the service road where the new Target is going up (south Square area) is great!
2. Mary Duffy. She's in the phone book and is located up HIllsborough Road in the Food Lion shopping center.
3. dr. renee gaskey-foley - i like my dentist, i got her name by calling 1-800-DENTIST. i think she's in the yellow pages!
4. Dr. Ha at carolina dental has been good. she seems really in tune to patient's stress about dental procedures, which is nice for a change! :-)
5. James Hoke
Prosthodontist
3709 D University Drive
Durham, NC 27707
(919) 489-8661
I have a deathly fear of dentist because when I was a child I had really painful experiences - so I understand what you are looking for. I found a dentist in Durham who seems to really understand my fear. i've been going to him for 4 years now and I have no complaints. You have to tell him about your apprehension (be upfront about it) - he is very understanding. Here is his information.
6. Dr. Stephanie Jenkins, in Highgate Park near Fayetteville Road and Highway 54. She is really great and has a wonderful staff. She's very easy to talk to and I'm sure she would appreciate your concerns. Her number is 361-0500; she even has a Web site: http://www.drjenkinsdds.com/
7. Dr. Charles Lohr got 2 recommendations.
- A dentist i wish i'd known about years ago who is known for being extremely kind to those w/o dental insurance is Dr. Charles Lohr. I had a great experience with his office when i went for my first check up in years last May. He and his assistants tell you what everything costs up front, what's necessary and what's not, and I've been told that they allow for payment plans. I'd definitely recommend him.
- I've been going to Dr. Charles Lohr for a few years. He's a very good dentist and his hygenists are nice (and good!). I've never been dentist shy, but, judging by his personality, I think he would be good with those who are a little more timid.
8. Laura Parra! Everyone I know goes to her.
9. Catherine Ray got 4 recommendations.
- She is lovely and spends a great deal of time with every patient to answer questions, go over dental hygiene techniques, and make sure they are comfortable. I definitely don't dread going to see her.
- She's not cheap, but she's very nice.
- I can recommend a very nice dentist. i've only been once, but my roommate has been her patient for years. I am also very dentist-shy, and I like her.
10. Dr. Turner
- I go to a dentist group of Drs. Hoffman, Jordan, Keck, and Turner- I go to Dr. Turner. They are only 5 min away from Duke, and their number is 383-7402. They have always been very friendly, and very pain sensitive (I'm a pain wuss). They are always willing to add more anesthesia until I'm comfortable, and are very understanding if you have any tooth sensitivities. The only problem is they are not BCBS providers, although their prices are within BCBS's recommendations, so I don't pay much extra.
11. Dr. Sulik in Chapel Hill. I LOVE my dentist. Very nice guy.
12. Dr. Dinah Vice in Chapel Hill. She was my husband's dentist as a child and now she is mine too. She is really good. One of her sons practices with her too, he is very friendly.
13. Dr. Charles Willis got 2 recommendations.
1212 Broad Street
286-0745
- He's the best. Very understanding and patient, as well as committed to his patients' understanding of diagnoses and alternative treatments. I'm always pleasantly surprised to discover that he has completed a procedure, particularly fillings.
- He's very good. I don't have dental problems, but my husband had some teeth filled, and he said Dr. Willis did a good job with them.
Dentist to AVOID:
Frank Ramos on the recommendation of someone else and found him and his staff to be completely out of touch with my needs and wants.

GREAT dentist is Dr. James Hoke
over near south square on University
he is GREAT!!!!
I think my dentist is terrific. He's on Broad St. James Pyle, DDS. Good guy!
I do have three dentists in the area that were recommended to me as being really good. I'm currently seeing one of them, Dr. James Pyle, and he has been excellent. His contact information is (919) 286-9667 and his office is located in Durham at 818 Broad Street. The other two individuals that were recommended to me were Dr. Willis and Dr. Pope.
Unfortunately, I don't have their contact information but I'm sure that you
could find it on-line.
I saw Jonathan Bregman while I was living in Durham, and he was fantastic--the
best dentist I've ever had, actually. I'd recommend him highly.
My dentist is Scott Donner - he's wonderful. His office is on University Drive between Old Chapel HIll and Shannon, so pretty close to campus. His number is 490-3015
I've only ever been to one in Durham, Dr. McDuffie-Watson on Fayetteville Rd. (919-484-7478). That was when I still had insurance coverage, and it was still pretty pricey, so I'm guessing it's expensive. They were certainly thorough, though, and had all the latest gadgets (seriously, I swear they took x-rays about 7 different ways and literally "scanned" my teeth for cavities - weird). I also heard that if you're looking to save money, there's a dental clinic at UNC that's an inexpensive alternative, so depending on what you need done, that might be a good solution.

Call BASIX
I had a similar experience when I went to Sunrise Dental; they said they were part of Basix though, but they just gave me a 10% discount, which was more expensive than the advertised fee schedule on the Basix website. I called Basix and left a voicemail, which was promptly returned, and I was told that was wrong. Basix followed up with the dentist office, and I quickly heard back from them (i.e., I was pretty impressed how quickly everything operated within a couple of days).
With that said, Sunrise Dental is just OK. The staff and everyone is very nice, but I feel that you're paying for the huge waterfall feature with engraved stone in the waiting room, a giant flatscreen TV that shows soothing images and affirmations, digital x-ray, and flat screen monitors in each "booth" so that you can review your x-rays as they're acquired... with all these amenities, no wonder healthcare is so expensive in the US.
