Any graduate or profession student group can apply for GPSC affiliation. Applying for affiliation is the first step in benefiting from all of the support that GPSC offers student groups! Affiliation is required to receive group funding, but all groups are encouraged to affiliate and seek GPSC support, whether or not funding is requested. Association for India's Development

Association for India's Development (AID) is a volunteer movement committed
to promoting sustainable, equitable and just development. In solidarity with
non-violent people's struggles, AID supports grassroots organizations in India
 and initiates efforts in various interconnected spheres such as education,
livelihoods, natural resources, health, women's empowerment and social justice.
At Duke University, we work closely with student community by representing the
Indian graduate students at campus-wide events like Springternational and Inter-
national foodfest. More importantly, we hold lectures and seminars by prominent
social workers and long term partners to create awareness about issues facing India,
that are often globally relevant, among students and individuals in the larger Triangle
community. We also conduct cultural and sporting events to raise funds to support
selected projects submitted by our NGO partners in India.

Duke Graduate Rugby Football Club

The rugby club welcomes players of all skill levels and experience. Any student of a

graduate school or employee of Duke University is eligible. Practices and matches are

competitive but also provide an environment conducive to learning the game. The club

maintains an active membership base of approximately 20-30 active players and an

additional 30-40 social members.  We compete in several MBA rugby tournaments each

year, as well as several regional matches against local schools and clubs.

community about microfinance's role in addressing issues like global poverty, inequality,

campus to learn and engage in microfinance.

We are officially affiliated as a student chapter with SPIE and The Optical Society of America,

Duke Startup Challenge

The Duke Start-Up Challenge is a business plan competition that runs the course of the
academic year, from September to April. The competition format advances through three
phases, each phase requiring one or more deliverables with multiple teams winning cash
and prizes throughout the competition for the best submissions. The prizes are awarded
to overall best plan/presentation and best submission in each of several categories (e.g.
High-Tech/IT, Healthcare/Lifesciences, Consumer Products/Services, and Social Enterprise).
Additionally, at the end of each phase, teams are provided with feedback from our panel
judges to help with further development of the business concept into the next phase and beyond.

Duke Tai Chi and I Liq Chuan

We study internal martial arts, the most familiar of which is Tai Chi.  Currently we study

I Liq Chuan, a relatively new art which is based on Tai Chi principles, but is more

comprehensive.  Beginner classes are currently held on Saturdays, 9:00am, near the

West Duke building; intermediate classes are on Tuesdays, 7:00pm, at the Biddle music

building.  There is currently no charge for these classes.

The Durham Capoeira Cooperative is an Durham-based organization founded by students
at Duke University in 2000. Today it includes 3 capoeira instructors, all of them graduate
students at Duke, as well as a diverse community of practitioners and participants from
Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Durham, and especially Duke University. In recent years the DCC
has worked to develop programs with Durham public schools and community centers.
Additionally, the club has established networks with other Universities in the area, such as
NCCU and, UNC. The instructors lead in capoeira training, performances and provide
cultural demonstrations all over the triangle.

Global Health Outreach Initiative- Duke Doctor of Physical Therapy

Students from the Duke Physical Therapy Class of 2009 will be embarking on a service-
learning trip to India. This year's class of 2009 will be continuing this initiative with a
second trip in May 2009. Our aim is to embrace the culture and volunteer assistance
to those providing physical therapy services to the people of India. We will be traveling
to the capital city Mumbai, where we will be working with a variety of charities and non-
government organizations for a period of ten days. During these ten days we will provide
service to those in need to gain a better understanding about barriers faced by other health
care systems.

open to any person with an express interest in providing support for the equal treatment

The chief goal of our organization is to disseminate information about the field of radiology
to the broad body of medical students interested in this field of medicine. We aim to
inform students about what a career in radiology would hold for them so that they can
more confidently decide if the field is right for them. We have a number of speakers attend
meetings with various expertise in Radiology, from tenured professors, to basic science
researchers, and even graduating medical students who will be pursuing a career in radiology.

Self Defense for Women

The purpose of this group is to prepare women for the possibility that they will be attacked
or confronted with a situation where the confrontation could be defused. The group will meet
mostly for hands-on training, provided by qualified and certified instructors. We'll also
discuss the myriad of situations where confrontations could occur, and we will actually practice
applying the self defense skills you will learn to specific situations.

SAF is a nationally accredited organization and the Duke Chapter is a part of the nationwide

network. There are many opportunities to get involved; we host campfires and nature walks,

organize symposiums related to forestry, monitor Johnston Mill Preserve with the Triangle

Land Conservancy, and host or are involved in many other activities. There are great

networking opportunities with professionals interested or working in forestry through the

local and regional chapters. Any student interested in forestry is welcome to join.

Fellowships automatically become members of the Society of Duke Fellows, but any interested

than 7,000 medical students, pre-medical students, residents and physicians. Established

Medical College, SNMA boasts over 40 years of service to underserved communities and
medical students.  SNMA is dedicated both to ensuring culturally sensitive medical
education and services, as well as increasing the number of African-American, Latino and
other students of color entering and completing medical school.

The Student International Discussion Group (SIDG) is a not-for-profit student-fueled group

in the Nicholas School of the Environment that promotes active awareness and discussion of

environmental and sustainability issues on an international scale.  Although the group's main

interests are environmental issues, also included are sustainable development and societal concerns.

The Sanford MPP Social Committee

The Social Committee is a graduate student organization affiliated with the soon-to-be

School of Public Policy that organizes social activities for students, faculty and staff affiliated

with the Sanford School.  Any student at Sanford may join, and the Social Committee also

partners with other graduate and professional programs on campus such as the Nicholas

School of Environment, GPSC and the Fuqua School of Business.


The Socratic Club

We hold weekly informal lunch meetings to discuss questions of theology and Christian
life.  We also organize large discussion events for the Divinity School, usually featuring
one or more high profile guests.
